EX-SALTHAWK HEENEY DRAFTED BY OAKLAND
As expected, a second Hutchinson High graduate was taken in the 2015 NFL Draft on Saturday, as Ben Heeney was drafted in the fifth round by the Oakland Raiders.
There is a bit of irony in Heeney going to Oakland, as Heeney grew up a Kansas City Chiefs fan. The Chiefs and Raiders have been rivals, at times bitter rivals, for more than 40 years.
Heeney, a 2011 graduate, joins former teammate and 2010 graduate Geneo Grissom as 2015 draft picks. Grissom was taken Friday in the third round by Super Bowl champion New England.
Heeney was a three-time state champion at Hutchinson High, helping the Salthawks win titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Heeney, a linebacker who played collegiately at Kansas, was the 140th overall pick. He joins an Oakland team looking to improve after a 3-13 season.
Being in the same division as Kansas City – the AFC West – Heeney will get to play the Chiefs twice. The Raiders visit Arrowhead Stadium on Jan. 3.
