Cardinals drop a pair at DeMatha

CARDINALS DROP A PAIR AT DEMATHA

Bishop Ireton and DeMatha cleared the rained-out earlier game with a doubleheader in Riverdale, Maryland, Saturday and the Stags took both ends of the affair, 15-1 in the opener and 6-4 in the nightcap. The home team surrendered a first inning run to the Cardinals when senior Ryan Scott drove in Chandler Wilder. DeMatha bounced back against freshman Brett Kelly in the home half of the opening frame for five runs. They added five more in the second before the game settled into a scoreless struggle, the Stags administering the knockout with five more in the sixth inning to win it by 10-run rule. Ireton's Kyle Guzik took the hill for Bishop Ireton in the nightcap. Once again, Ireton struck early, plating three in the first while DeMatha answered with a pair in the bottom of the first. The Cardinals got one back in the top of the second, but DeMatha scored three more in the home half of the second to go ahead 5-4. They added an insurance run in the sixth and blanked the Cardinals for the win. Senior Ryan Scott, the redbirds leading hitter, was 4 for six on the day and drove in a pair of runs. The lanky catcher is hitting .368 to pace Ireton this season. The Cardinals (2-16, 1-13) stay in their road uniforms as they travel to Good Counsel on Monday at 4:30 on Bottgal Field. Bishop Ireton will recognize their seniors Wednesday at Frank Mann Field for the ball club's final regular season contest. First pitch with the Knights of St Mary's is 5:30pm.
