ST. CLAIR RUNS PAST WARREN WOODS-TOWER

Ethan Mahn met the challenge presented to him by St. Clair offensive coordinator Chad Miller on Friday night. Mahn had 137 yards on 11 carries, scoring on runs of 8, 64 and 20 yards, leading the host Saints to a 38-13 MAC Gold Division win over visiting Warren Woods-Tower. “Coach Miller challenged Ethan this week to get 124 yards on 15 carries,” St. Clair coach Bill Nesbitt II said. “He met the match I guess.” St. Clair’s other running back, Ben Davidson, staked the Saints to a 15-0 lead in the first half, scoring on runs of 1 and 3 yards. Mahn scored all three of his TDs in the second half. “We try to hang our hat on our running game,” Nesbitt said. “We expect it to be solid. Our offensive line is young, but they’re getting better. Our backs are our bread and butter back there.” St. Clair’s defense was equally impressive, allowing the Titans only 47 yards rushing and 68 yards through the air. WWT cut the Saint lead to 15-7 midway through the second quarter when quarterback Matthew Byrd connected with Matthew Bell for a 10-yard TD strike. A late Saint 20-yard field goal by Ian Janssen sent St. Clair into the half leading 18-7. The Titans closed the gap to 25-13 late in the third quarter when Byrd connected with Jajuan Lovejoy for a 7-yard TD pass. However, on the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Mahn broke free for a 64-yard score. “I told the kids this was going to be a heavyweight boxing match,” WWT coach Al Gulick said. “It was going to be a powerful game and that’s what we got. They just ran it down our throat and we have to get better at tackling.” “We played much better tonight,” Nesbitt said. “We have a long way to go to where we want to be, but we played better, especially defensively.” Byrd led the Titans, completing 8-of-13 passes for 66 yards. The loss dropped WWT’s record to 0-2 overall, 0-1 league. “(St. Clair) had a great defense, they’re well-coached and that’s a great football team up here,” Gulick said. “We’re playing a sophomore quarterback (Byrd) and we’re having some growing pains with him. He’s a great athlete, but made some bad decisions tonight. He’s going to get better and we’re not giving up on him.” The win improved St. Clair’s record to 1-1 overall, 1-0 league.
