TELLEZ HAS ONLY GOAL AS SALTHAWK SOCCER WINS

This was a spine-tingling moment for Hutchinson High coach Brad Binns. On Senior Day, a senior who doesn't get noticed much provided the game's only goal. A player who does the so-called little things - like working hard, listening to the coaches and then applying those lessons - was the hero in a game Hutchinson needed to win to improve its postseason seed. For Alonso Tellez, the day was just as memorable, as he helped lead Hutchinson to a 1-0 win against Salina Central at the Salthawk Sports Complex. It's likely a game he won't forget. "For me, today was special," Tellez said. "My mom was here, and it was her first time seeing me play. I've only played the last two years here, so it felt good, and since it was my mom's first time seeing me play, it felt even better." Tellez, who notched his second goal of the season, put Hutchinson ahead in the 17th minute. Mason Faucett centered the ball in front of the Salina Central goal. Goakeeper Keaton Beach tried to knock the ball away, but the ball went to Tellez, who easily kicked the ball into the goal. "I'm really proud of him," Binns said. "Those are the goals that give you goosebumps, and it's because he plays so hard. He hasn't played many minutes, but lately, he has played more because he plays hard. He always works hard, in class and in soccer. When he gets on the field, he makes the most of it." Scoring goals hasn't been the Salthawks' strength this season, but perhaps Tellez can add something to the attack. "He works really hard, and he's a scrappy player," Faucett said. "It was special for him today, and special for everybody." The defense was its usual wall, rarely allowing Central a legitimate scoring opportunity in earning its seventh shutout of the season and fourth in a row. "I was proud we finished the game," Binns said. "It was ugly, but we did what we had to do to give us a chance on Thursday to get where we want to be." THE QUICK HIT KEY STAT: Hutchinson has won four games in a row, its longest win streak of the season. THE TURNING POINT: Hutchinson's defense was in lock-down mode most of the game, but midway through the second half, Central's Kadin Louthan broke free. Hutchinson defender Devin Luce closed down, and caused enough pressure for Louthan to shoot wide. Central didn't come close to scoring again. PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hutchinson senior Alonso Tollez. He score the only goal of the game, and with Hutchinson jockeying for regional seeding, it could prove to be a big goal. HE SAID IT: "We're finally starting to come together. We're scoring goals and connecting better, but we're not at our peak yet." - Hutchinson senior forward Mason Faucett. UP NEXT: Hutchinson (9-6) wraps up the regular season Thursday at Campus. Salina Central (4-10-1) hosts Maize South.
