WESSEL WINS; HUTCH WILL SEND 3 TO STATE

After finishing sixth last year at regionals as a freshman, Hutchinson Salthawk sophomore Raegan Wessel took home first place in singles at the 6A Dodge City Regional on Saturday. Wessel beat Kaylen Davis of Campus in the championship match. This performance will earn her a high seed and bye next week at the state tournament. “She made big strides,” Salthawks coach Robert Nixon said. “She’s played really well and has been very consistent all season for me.” Nixon always stresses to his players the importance of peaking at the right time at regionals. He’ll always be able to show senior Grace Proett and junior Abby Brown as perfect examples. The duo was able to earn a trip to state and finished fourth in doubles. “They’ve been playing well the last two or three tournaments,” Nixon said. “They’ve been really clicking and working together and making strides. They’ve been getting better everyday." Also in the regional, Dodge City qualified singles players Leah Stein and Suzy Arkell, while Garden’s Megan Bordewick and Linh Le earned singles spots to state. In doubles, Garden City’s Shai Cartmill and Sally Dinkel won the regional, while Dodge City’s Hannah Sowers and Adriana Rodriguez finished sixth.
