Ursuline overcomes injuries; Columbia respond

URSULINE OVERCOMES INJURIES; COLUMBIA RESPOND

The unsung hero of the Ursuline volleyball team could be its trainer. The Bears have been hit by a myriad of injuries this season. A broken ankle and a couple of back issues highlight the list. Throw in mononucleosis as well. “I haven’t had my full squad since day one,” Ursuline coach Gretchen Moser said. “I’m dressing three JV players this week and most likely they will see the court.” Ursuline hasn’t let the ailments prevent it from having a strong season. The Bears, No. 4 in the STLhighschoolsports.com large-school rankings, are 11-2 with their only losses coming to top-ranked small school St. Pius X and Wheaton St. Francis, a Chicago-area powerhouse. The short-handed Bears notched another quality victory over No. 6 Cor Jesu on Tuesday, outlasting the Chargers 22-25, 25-22, 25-20. “Everyone has been a contributing factor,” Moser said. “Our wins are team wins, largely because we have a lot of people playing different positions.” The injuries have forced several Bears out of their comfort zones. Some players have had to embrace six-rotation roles, while others have found themselves in unfamiliar positions. Setter Casey Cepicky is averaging 9.63 assists. Anna Bair (4.93 kills) and Erica Maurer (3.03 kills) have emerged as go-to options. The heart of Ursuline is the players’ unselfishness. Moser points to Kelly Trenz, who had never played front row but was moved up due to the injuries. Trenz responded by becoming second on the team in kills in a couple of matches. “They are great kids,” Moser said. “They work hard. They do what I ask them to do. The team comes first and that’s what makes this team a pleasure to coach.” The schedule doesn’t get any easier. Ursuline takes on No. 1 St. Joseph’s on Thursday and dates with top teams such as Lutheran South, Eureka and Nerinx Hall loom. “We have to continue to work hard and play for each other,” Moser said. “We have to know that any wins are team wins and any losses we learn from them. As much as I’d like to say we won’t have any losses, we are. That’s part of the game. We’ve got to learn from them.”
